Joe was born in Salem, Oregon to Hubert and Maynona Zander. He spent most of his life in Sunland/Tujunga area of California. He graduated from Verdugo Hills High School in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corp and the infantry under Patton in the ETO. After returning to Tujunga, he met and married his wife of 65 years. Betty Jean Zander. He was the father of Victoria Myers and Robert Zander. He is survived by his wife and children, three grandchildren, Kelly Myers, Grant L.T. Myers II and Garrett Zander. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Daniel Grant Booterbaugh, Codi Myers, Sloane Victoria Booterbaugh, Avery Myers, Bailey Myers, Kyle Myers, Riley Myers and the best friend of the family, Trish Peterson along with his caregiver, Susan Page. After his family, Joe's great passion was baseball. He played semi-pro ball in Daytona Beach and St. Petersburg, Florida in the late 1940s. He was the director of parks at Sunland Park. He was also a member of the Culver City Comets who won the Triple-A Softball Championship in 1957. After his retirement from Lockheed and JPL, he traveled the country playing and winning senior softball world championships in each age group: 50s, 60s, 65s, 70s, 75s and 80s in 2003. He was accompanied by his loving wife, best fan and rooter, Betty. He was inducted into the Senior Softball Hall of Fame in Phoenix, AZ in 2002. He played senior softball locally three times a week until he was sidelined by Parkinson's. In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions to the Parkinson's Foundation for research and cure. A memorial service will be held on Saturday afternoon at Douglas Mortuary in El Segundo.
