John Mardesic, 81, passed away unexpectedly on May 30. John was born on November 3, 1931 in Vela Luka, Croatia. During
, when he was 11 years old he and his mother traveled as refugees to the Sinai Peninsula, where they remained until traveling to the United States in 1947. Upon settling in Southern California, he resided between San Pedro and Rancho Palos Verdes for 66 years. After graduating from San Pedro High School he served in the Air Force during the
. Upon returning from his military service he enrolled and graduated from Northrop Institute of Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering. His career encompassed the aerospace industry where he worked on the space shuttle until his retirement. John was a proud member of the Croatian Hall, where he regularly visited, participated and supported their activities. He was also a member of the
. John loved to travel with family and friends. He made many trips in the states and abroad, as well as enjoyed numerous cruises. He is survived by his wife, Maria, of fifty years; sons, Mirko and Mario; daughter, Glori (Mark); grandchildren, Marissa Mardesic, and Ryan and Myla Axtell. He will be missed greatly. Viewing will be held Friday, June 7, 2013 from 3:00-8:00pm at McNerney's Mortuary. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 10:30am at Mary Star of the Sea Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory can be made to the Croatian Scholarship fund:
