Joseph D. Calenda
Joe passed away peacefully of natural causes on January 14, 2013, at the age of 91. He was born on April 18, 1921 in St. Louis, Missouri to Phillip and Antonia Calenda. He was the youngest of 9 children. When Joe was 15 years old, he traveled to California with his parents and sisters and San Pedro became his home. His working career always revolved around the waterfront. He worked first for the canneries and then moved on to Connolly Pacific, skippering his own tugboat. He finished up his career working as a Marine Clerk for Local 63. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary. He is survived by his daughters, Donna (Lou) Gualeni and Antoinette (Andy) Zankich; grandchildren, Gina (Otto) Henke, Kristen (Mike) Collins, Joe (Jane) Gualeni, Vince (Danielle) Zankich, Drew Zankich; and 11 great grandchildren, Mary Kate and Jenna Henke, Zachary, Devyn, Danica and Jolie Collins, Joey, Matty and Jack Gualeni and Ryan and Dylan Zankich. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. A Vigil Service will be held Friday, January 18, 2013, 7:00 p.m. at McNerney's Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, January 19, 2013, 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, followed by interment at Green Hills Memorial Park.
