Juletta York Straky Obituary
Juletta York Straky "Jay"
1951 - 2013
62, passed away in the arms of her loving husband on Tuesday, February 19, 2013. She fought Ovarian Cancer for 5 1/2 years and never gave up. The world has lost a truly wonderful and beautiful person, who loved life and her family. Born January 25, 1951, in Long Beach, Calif., to Juletta and Ernie York. Jay spent her childhood in San Pedro, and graduated from Narbonne High in 1969. She remained in the Los Angeles area working for both Tiger and Korean Airlines. On Valentines Day, 40 years ago, she went on her first date with her husband, David Straky. They had a whirlwind courtship, and nine weeks later, on May 5, 1973, they were married at St. Marks Church, Venice, Calif. Jay and Dave started their family in Mar Vista, Calif., where they had their three children. During that time Jay made some of her most cherished life long friends. In January 1985, the Straky Family moved to Thousand Oaks to raise their family. Jay was very active in her children schools and sports activities and always volunteered to work in the "snack shacks" for her kids sporting events. She also worked at Circle Ski and Sports part-time to help her family "hit the slopes." After her children left home she started a career at Amgen in Newbury Park. Jay worked as a Corporate Security Associate and made a whole new circle of friends at Amgen. Both Jay and Dave retired in 2007, which gave them the opportunity to travel around the United States and do lots of RV'ing, and making more friends and living life. After she was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer, she continued to RV and travel at every chance, making new friends along the way. She showed us how to fight and live life to the fullest! She taught us to never give up. Jay thrived on volunteering at her children schools and sports activities, car pooling and making friends with anyone she encountered. There was never a party she wanted to miss. Jay always had lots of untapped energy. She never missed a chance to take her kids and their friends to the beach, or even loading up her van and driving four or five kids to the local mountains to snow ski. She loved the summer family trips to camp at Twin Lakes, Bridgeport and always commented how nice the pines trees smelled. We never meet anyone who didn't love her everywhere we went. She left her children and granddaughters with a perfect blueprint of how to live their lives, celebrate Christmases, Birthdays, Family trips and gatherings. She loved her friends and family, but her four granddaughters were the pride and joy of her life. She could never resist an opportunity to go take them shopping. She loved reading, floating in the pool and having her family around every chance she had. There is not a corner, nook or cranny that our mother and Nana doesn't exist in our lives. Jay was known as Mom, Mama Jay, Nana and Jaybird. Jay is survived by her husband, David, of Thousand Oaks; her three children, Ali (Chad Ebner), David and Nicole; daughter-in-law, Nikki Straky; grandchildren, Kylie Ebner, Lindsey Ebner, Paige Straky and Dylan Straky; stepmother, Lela York of San Pedro; brother and sister-in-law, Larkin and Pat (Guerra) York of San Pedro. A Celebration of Life honoring Jay will be held Monday, March 4, 2013, at 11 a.m. Ascension Lutheran Church, 1600 E. Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the fight against Ovarian Cancer at "Runforher.com."
