Lawrence Poelvoorde Obituary

Our beloved husband and father, Lawrence Poelvoorde, passed away peacefully at home in Torrance on Saturday, December 4, 2010. "Larry" was born on March 10, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan to Albert and Florine Poelvoorde. The family moved to Warren, Michigan where he graduated from St. Clements High School in 1966. He met Colleen Fitzsimons, also of Detroit, in 1969 and they were married on May 3, 1974. After traveling in the United States and Europe, the couple finally put down roots in Southern California, first in Huntington Beach, where their daughter, Lauren, was born in 1979, and then in Manhattan Beach where their son, Max, was born in 1981. They moved to Torrance in 1983 and have called it home ever since. Larry worked for the waterbed industry, as a sales representative, and finally retired from the Federal Express Corporation where he worked as a courier and service representative for twenty years. He is best remembered for his creativity, his laughter, and most of all, his music. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Colleen; his daughter, Lauren; his son, Max; his parents, Albert and Florine Poelvoorde; his sister, Susan Clark; three nieces; one nephew; and numerous other relatives and close friends. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 9, 2010 from 4-8 p.m. at Halverson, Stone, and Myers Mortuary. A funeral mass in his honor will be celebrated on Friday, December 10, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. at Nativity Church in Torrance. The family would like to thank the caring and compassionate Providence Trinity Hospice team of Torrance and requests that donations be made to them in lieu of flowers. Please go the mortuary's website, www.halversonstonemyers.com to send the family messages or to share a "Hats off to Larry" memory. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.

It starts when the phone rings. I hear a loud laugh and the voice says...It's Larry. I say no kidding, who else could it be with that laugh. The conversation goes the whole gambit from talking about the old days in Detroit to the vollyball games on the beach in Manhattan Beach.
Wow what a ride we have taken over the years. We have dont it all, good and bad. We did it all to the fullest. I know how much you love Lauren, Max and (Saint) Colleen. I hope it is true that we will all be together again. Like we would say at the end of the phone call...see you later brother. We will miss you very much.

Even though too many years passed since I played with Larry I was never far away, in my mind, from the friendship we shared. Larry and Colleen were a couple of the big reasons that Marianne and I made the move to California in 1977 and I sure have a lot of wonderfull memmories of our friendship. Collen, Lauren and Max I can only say that I am deeply sorry for your loss.

I will always remember Larry picking up Max, Justin, and me from school. I loved listening to the music Larry would play-- the Jazz and the oldies. Rides in the VW Bus and Cadillac were fun. He also made me my first "Sloppy Joe" sandwich. Larry will definitely be missed. May he rest in peace.

To The Poelvoorde Family,
Our deepest sympathy. It is so hard to lose someone you loved so dearly.
We met Larry and Collen after Butch and Bernie moved in next door to us. We enjoyed camping, waterskiing, BBQ'S, jamming in the garage & making beautiful music together or so we thought. Somtimes we sounded pretty good. We were honored when Larry showed up to our last Summer Party. He wasn't going out very often and it meant alot to us to see him in our home.
We are going to miss "The Mole."
Love, Marie and Carl Johnson

We are so sad and want you, Colleen, Max, and Lauren to know you are in our prayers. I will miss the silly laugh when I answer the telephone and the crazy stories. You lived accross the country yet it seemed like you were next door. We have shared happy times and sad times and when the happy times come again we will know Larry is looking down on us. God bless you all.

My memories of my big brother start when we were kids. Waking up so early on Christmas morning that mom started the coffee only to realize it was 4 am yelling-BACK TO BED! The teasing back and forth always ending in me crying and him laughing hysterically. And when we tried to play board games he cheated and won everytime but I kept wanting to play again. I remember how I missed him when he moved out and then later moved to California. He was always moms favorite which I still can't figure out why. I am so sad that I didn't have more time to be with him! I thank God he had Colleen by his side in good times and in bad. And lucky to have his great kids, Lauren and Max who I know he loved very much! Until we meet again, I love you Larry...Your Sister Sue!

Larry and I go back to middle school. Together we have shared so much of life's journey.........from the first time we skipped out of church at St Clement, the first bottle of beer, the first kiss of a girl, the living together on Burg road, the disappointments we caused each other, the European travel, the move to California, our marriages, being neighbors, the birth of our children, the loss of our best friend, and the never ending communication. He taught me how to celebrate the highs and guard against the lows. His presence in my life was a gift from God and he helped me understand the true meaning of what real friendship is about. Even with his passing our love for one another will never end. I know he is now with the first member of our boyhood trio and they are together in God's place.
Our sincerest love and regrets to Colleen, Lauren and Max. We wish we could hold you in our arms, but please know we hold you in our hearts.
