Lawrence Higgins Obituary

Lawrence Thomas Higgins died in his home in Rancho Palos Verdes, California of natural causes on January 3, 2011. Lawrence was born on October 15, 1926 in Bronx, New York, son of James and Nora Higgins of Edgewater, New Jersey. After high school, Lawrence served in the Army in World War II. Lawrence graduated in 1951 from Fordham University with a Bachelor of Science and also was the most valued player of the Fordham football team, under the leadership and with the warm friendship of Vince Lombardi. Upon graduation, he was recruited by the Chicago Bears but then decided to instead serve for his country and worked for the Central Intelligence Agency for 35 years. While in service, Lawrence contributed during the Korean, Vietnam, and Cold Wars. Lawrence continued his education throughout his life and received a Notary Public, MBA, Hotel Management Degree, and a real estate license. Lawrence spent the latter part of his life in Los Angeles where he became a member of the SAG (Screen Actors Guild)/AFTRA, and appeared in numerous Hollywood films. He was also an active member of the San Pedro Elks Club. Lawrence is survived by his two daughters, Caroline and Patricia Higgins; two granddaughters, Valerie and Ruby; his loving partner, Mary Ellen Blinn; and his beloved black Labrador, Coal. Memorial Services will be held at Mount Carmel Cemetery Chapel, 10 Serpentine Road, Tenafly, New Jersey 07670 at 11:00 a.m. on January 22, 2011. Larry was a giant of a man. Great personality and a big smile And laugh. I recall his office at Hughes was decorated with items he picked up in Africa. He used to have lock pick set that he probably kept after leaving the CIA. He was a very generous person. He bought a dress for my daughter when she was born. I wish he were still around so I could get a history lesson about the Cold War from someone at the front line. Thank you Larry for your years of service defending our country. Mitch Levine

I think about Larry whenever I drive past his house off of Prospect.

Caroline - I will always remember your Dad driving his van up to Sebastopol with his brother Artie and dogs, arriving just in time for Val's soccer games. How about getting Val settled into UCSB that day 4 1/2 years ago :-) I also remember the most enjoyable dinner in Boston with Larry, Mary Ellen, Patricia, you and our girls. He was truly charming, warm and larger than life.

Oh and the ride to Vermont in the back of that pick up with the colman heater four kids and a dog. Wouldn t get away with that today but it was great... cousin Tim

I also woked with Larry at Hughes Aircraft in El Segundo. He always had a smile on his face and treated everyone with respect and kindness. I am deeply sorry to hear of his passing. Catherine St. John

As Calvin Canedy's financee, I was always the only female among Larry, Larry Lepore and Cal. I also shared many a good time in Larry's company and was always included in whatever activity they were doing. I, too, will miss Larry and his gentlemanly ways. My deepest sympathies go to his 2 daughters and granddaughters.

I considered Larry as one of my very best friends. We shared a lot of time together either in Hermosa Beach, Big Bear and San Pedro. I will truly miss him and the many good times we spent together. My sympathies to his 2 daughters and grand daughters. Calvin G. Canedy

I worked with Larry at Hughes Aircraft. His personality could fill the room. He was a "people person" and always treated everyone in a warm friendly manner. My sympathies to his family and loved ones on their loss.

I had the pleasure of working with Larry at Hughes Aircraft Company. He was a real character and just a terrific person. I visited him several times when he lived in Hermosa Beach to just B.S'd with him. He bought a gift for my daughter when she was born 20 years ago and I'll always remember him for his kind gesture.
