Manuel Feliciano Obituary

Manuel Feliciano was born November 5, 1928 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, married Maria Dolores Peniza on June 5, 1953 in Ponce, Puerto Rico and left this earth on September 25, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. Manuel was a genius. His knowledge covered subjects as diverse but not limited to mathematics, computers (beginning with computers with vacuum tubes and continuing up to today), language (he learned German over the summer of 1964 so he could write a book with German colleagues), religion (he became a deacon in the catholic church), along with other hobbies such as opera, literature, cinema, woodworking, camping, and telling stories. Manuel worked as a teacher in the University of Puerto Rico; and met his future wife in his class. Three of their children were born in Puerto Rico. He moved to Oak Ridge Tennessee to work for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in August 1957. He completed his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1970. Five more children were born in Tennessee. In 1974 he accepted a position at The Aerospace Corporation so he moved the family to Cypress, CA. While in California he began teaching again at Loyola University in Los Angeles. Manuel was active in the community. With eight children, he was always driving the kids to boy scout camp, or camp fire girl events. Supporting schools, Manuel would write and draw ABC books for kindergarten classes. Using his knowledge of language and math, he often could be found reading technical books for Recordings for the Blind. In his leisure time he enjoyed woodworking, drive-in movies (horror preferred) and the opera. Every Friday night he could be found at Senor Big Ed's eating Puerto Rican food and listening to Puerto Rican Music. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits. He is survived by his wife Maria, eight children (spouses in parentheses) Maria D. McDermid (Matt); Manuel Feliciano III (Susan); Jaime R. Feliciano (Phyllis); Carmen M. Owen (John); Anselm J. Feliciano (Betzy); Teresa M. Stevenson (Tracy); Rose V. Feliciano (Steve Daley); and William C. Feliciano, sisters Mercedes Torres, Olga Lloyd, Delia Ramirez and Brother-in-law Sam Horowitz and eight grand children.

I was very saddened to learn of Manny's passing. He was a friend and mentor to me when I was a young engineer at The Aerospace Corporation. I will always remember his infectious laugh and how easily he could get into discussions on almost any subject with his co-workers. I think anyone who knew him from our time in the DSP Program Office will remember him with great fondness, and I offer to his family my deepest condolences on their loss.--Barbara

Colleague, mentor, friend, with a wonderful sense of humor. I had not seen Manny since he left Aerospace but I remember him well. I am sad to hear of his death and send my condolences to his family. - Paul
