Marjorie Ann Matthis Obituary
Marjorie Ann Matthis

Marjorie Ann Matthis, born at her family home in Manhattan, Montana, on September 12, 1933, passed over to her eternal home on Mother's Day, May 13, 2012. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ray Matthis, nearly four years earlier. She and her twin sister, Marguerite, were the youngest of 11 children born to Goldie Van Horssen and Pearl Herndon. Margie, as she was known to her many friends and loved ones, most recently lived in Murrietta, CA, but previously resided in San Marcos, Hemet and Redondo Beach. She is survived by four children: Deanna Mandish, (Mike) of Torrance; Debi Horton, (Bob) of San Marcos; Dona Holiday, of Temecula; and Tony Matthis, (Chris) of Hemet. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Mike (Katie) and Brian Stevens, Amanda Mandish Green (Danny), Summer Holiday and Daniel and Amber Matthis. Margie also was blessed to have three great-grandchildren, Ruby Green, Khloe Stevens and Trevor Bartosh. Additionally, she leaves behind two sisters, Wilma Harrison, of Manhattan, Montana and Marguerite Campbell, of Richland, Washington as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews she adored. She grew up in Montana where she met her husband and the love of her life, Ray. There they married and had three daughters before moving to Redondo Beach in 1960. It was there, that their mutual love of children lead them to became foster parents to infants awaiting adoption. Over a period of several years, together they were temporary parents to over 40 infants awaiting adoption. The final child placed in their care became their own, when they chose to adopt their long awaited son, Tony. She and Ray opened their home through the years to many friends and family members in need of a temporary home. There was always room for one more at their table. Together they raised a family and worked together to provide for those they loved. They were generous, sometimes to a fault, giving first and asking questions later. Margie knew everyone, everywhere she went. She had friends at every stop along her path. She thrived on interacting with others and would strike up a conversation with anyone in her line of sight. She was intensely interested in the details of the lives of those around her. Everyone who knows her has a "Margie" story. We will, no doubt, be re-telling them for years to come. She gravitated toward children and they, to her. She loved spending time with her kids and grandkids more than anything and the feeling was mutual. Our sweet Nanny brought us all enough smiles and laughter to last a lifetime. She will live on in our hearts and our memories until we meet again. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday the First of June at Mission Hills Church in San Marcos, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to "Special Ministries" indicating, " In Memory of Margie Matthis" in the memo section of your check. Donations may be sent to Special Ministries c/o Hope Chapel, 2420 Pacific Coast Highway, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254. Children's lives will be forever changed by your donation. Margie will be long remembered and greatly missed. Her parting is our loss, but, heaven's gain. We take comfort believing she entered Heaven's gates and is now in the presence of Our Lord and reunited with her beloved husband, Ray. She wants for nothing. God is good. Please sign the guestbook
