1927 - 2013
Passed away in the early morning of January 13, 2013 after a battle against Parkinsons. Marvin was born July 16, 1927 in Wilmington, Delaware. He attended Purdue University and graduated from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 1951. He married Gertrude (Klein) Barab on July 13, 1951. He and Gertrude lived in Chicago after they were married where he worked in advertising. In 1956 he took a position with the Parker Pen Company, relocating to Janesville, WI. From 1959 to 1965 he served as Director Marketing Research for the Mattel Toy Company in Los Angeles where among other products he was involved in the creation and marketing of Barbie. Working from home, he founded Barcam Publishing Company in 1958 and began publishing the Family Camping Directory, which eventually became the Rand McNally Guidebook to Campgrounds. During the 1970's and 1980's he owned the Southern California College of Medical and Dental Careers and was President of the National Association of Trade and Technical Schools from 1979 to 1981. He was a great dad and always quick with a story or business advice. He is survived by his children, Jordan, Neal, and Caryn; nephews, Peter and Drew Barab whom he helped raise; and his grandchildren, Nicole, Madeleine, William, Kami, Griffin, Teo and Lia; and nephews and nieces, Jeff Barab, Ron Barab and Jackie Barab.
