Fr. Michael Travers Adams Obituary
Fr. Michael Travers Adams
August 26, 1939 to October 20, 2013
Fr. Michael Adams passed away peacefully in the South Bay on October 20, 2013 after a brief illness. He was cared for in the home of the Jennings family, one of his adopted Samoan families, whose loving devotion and constant care assisted in his peaceful passing. Fr. Adams was raised in Burbank, the only son of five children born to Thelma and Milton Adams. In 1957, he and nine others from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks joined the Brothers of Holy Cross. He graduated cum laude from St. Edwards University in Austin, TX in 1961. He later left the Brothers to become a Roman Catholic priest and was ordained in Monterey, CA on May 24, 1968. After serving in parishes in Northern California, he transferred to Samoa in 1972 as secretary to the Cardinal of Western Samoa. He immersed himself in Samoan culture and dedicated his life to improving the lives of his beloved adopted Samoan families. He returned to the US in 2003 and retired from the Diocese of Monterey in 2004. He settled in San Pedro and had brief stays in Sonora and Palm Springs. After "retiring" in San Pedro, he was associated with Mary Star of the Sea Parish where he cultivated many new friends. He was known for his inspired homilies and touched many with his eloquence, honesty and sense of humor. He remained in touch with many who became his friends, near and far. He will be cherished and dearly missed by those who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Darlene Parks and Marcia Henry. He is survived by his sisters, Vicki Adams (Paul) Soll and Patti Adams, the Jennings family and his many other adopted Samoan families. Fr. Adams always set a high priority on education and to that end, a fund will be established in his name to provide scholarships for Catholic high school children in Samoa.
