Randy Kjenstad Obituary

Randy passed away on October 20, 2010 at his home. He was born August 28, 1950 in Clear Lake, South Dakota to Selmer and Ruby Kjenstad. The family moved to California shortly after Randy's birth. He attended Torrance schools, graduating from Torrance High in 1968. He was hired by the Torrance Police Department in 1972 and proudly served for 30 years. He enjoyed the many family gatherings and spending time with close, and sometimes crazy, friends...many desert trips, camping, cruises, trips to South Dakota, Wisconsin and Texas...wonderful memories!! He, also, enjoyed all things golf and watching football and baseball. Randy is survived by his original wife of 36 years, Patti; sons, Clint and Scott…both of whom he was very proud; and granddaughter, Satori…who he adored. Also survived by his brother, Don (Ginny White); sisters, Karen (Don) Gray and Pam (Kevin) Goins; and many other loving relatives too numerous to name. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral service will be held at 11am on Saturday, October 30 at King's Way Community Church, 1748 W. 251st St. Lomita, CA. Interment to follow at Green Hills Cemetery in Rancho Palos Verdes. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the John Wayne Cancer Institute or the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. The love, prayers and support of our family and dear friends during this unimaginable time has been very much appreciated. We love you all. We, also, wish to thank the caring doctors, wonderful nurses, and the more than understanding hospice staff at Torrance Memorial Hospital…some people can earn their angel wings while on earth. Also, a heartfelt thank you to Pastor Nori Hanaoka and the sweet Congregation of King's Way Community Church for their many prayers and all the delicious food. Randy was a guy who was very quiet (mostly "under the radar" as we say in the trade) but a good friend to many and I was lucky to have known him during his time at TPD. God Bless his family during this time.

I first met Randy in elementary school almost 50 years ago. we went to high school and then to college. We had a lot of fun growing up. We went camping, went on trips and played golf every week. We always had fun. Everyone wishes they could have a friend like Randy. Randy's wife Patti, sons Clint and Scott made Randy Very Happy and Very Very Proud, what a great family! I am so honored and fortunate to have had Randy's friendship all these years.

Randy, you will always be one of the truly good guys. When John Wayne said, "A man oughta do what he thinks is right", he described perfectly how you lived your life. The good times and friendship we have shared with you and Patti will forever be with us. Say "Hi" to the Duke and my dad (for me) and don't try to pull any strings for the USC/UCLA game! To Patti,(your original wife), Clint and Scott, all my love.

Randy was a great friend to my brother, Steve Hasegawa. I remember growing up and there would always be Randy and Mark Sims and Jim Crew walking up the driveway while Steve was working on his car. They would all hang out together. They all went through Torrance High together and remained good, close friends. It is very sad to our whole family that Randy has passed. Good people always seem to be taken away from us too soon. We will miss Randy.

My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the Kjenstad family. I had the privledge and honor to work with Randy for many years at TPD. I additionaly had the great pleasure of spending alot of time on the golf course with Randy as my golf partner. Randy was such a wonderful friend. His leadership and mentoring when I first entered Detectives was so valuable and I will be forever grateful. We have all lost a great man and an even better friend. God Bless

Randy and I met about 53 years ago in the 2nd grade. We went through elementary & high school and the first couple years of college together.
We went on camping trips, dirt bike trips and did many other things together including being Police Officers for the City of Torrance. Our friendship continued through retirement up to his passing.

I have so many wonderful memories of my good friend.
Randy was highly intelligent, had a great sense of humor and a Love for family and friends. He was a person of integrity that made people around him feel good.
I feel really blessed to have known him. He was absolutely “THE BEST”.

My heart goes out to his wife Patti sons, Clint and Scott and the rest of the Kjenstad clan. I understand and feel your loss because I Loved Randy like a Brother.

The world is much poorer without him. He left us way too soon.

Dear Patti and family,
To say that my heart is broken is an understatement. Randy was a rock to me and I will forever be a better person for knowing him and having him in my life. Patti, as the original wife, you know how much his friendship meant to me. I know that he is with Ruby and his Dad, so I am at peace with it. BUT... I will miss him so much. Love to you and the boys.
