Former News-Pilot editor Bob Beck went to the "Great Composing Room" in the sky at the age of 84 because of a ruptured aneurysm. He was well-known for his great sense of humor and for his love and support of the community. A country boy from Illinois who found his first arrowhead at age 7, he grew up like Tom Sawyer and had a charmed childhood as an only child of loving parents. He married his high school sweetheart, Billie McCuan, and had two sons that he adored, David and Mark. Eventually he would have two grandsons, Nigel and Simon. He worked for the Illinois Central Railway, did a stint in the Navy, took advantage of the GI Bill and became a journalist. His career with the News-Pilot spanned more than 30 years. He loved San Pedro and found every opportunity to feature it and its people in the newspaper. A second marriage to Doris Theriault broadened his horizons. He gained a sister, Lynn, a daughter, Melissa, a son-in-law, Jimmy and a granddaughter, Kailyn. He retired and learned to relax, picnic, travel and deepen his love of the Native American culture. Since his retirement in 1991, Bob and Doris got to enjoy over 20 years of laughing and volunteering together, living life to the fullest. A "Celebration of Bob's life" will take place from 2-4 pm Saturday, May 18, at the former News-Pilot building (now TangerineKangaroo, an eco-friendly store), 366 W. Seventh Street in his beloved San Pedro. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Better Breathers Club, 1300 W. 7th Street, San Pedro, CA 90732 or to the San Pedro Bay Historical Society, 638 S. Beacon St., Room 626, San Pedro, CA 90731. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
