He was born February 11, 1932 in Troy, New York, the son of August and Marion (Piper) Buchalla. Bob enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 18. In 1953, Robert was honorably discharged and awarded two Purple Hearts for his wounds received in the Chosen Reservoir and the 38th Parallel where he gallantly served during the Korean Conflict.
