Susan Schneider Obituary
November 6, 1931 – December 21, 2012

Susan Schneider passed away peacefully Friday, December 21, 2012 at her daughter's home in San Ramon, CA. At 81 years of age, she had called the Palos Verdes Peninsula her home for 49 years. The first of five children, Susan was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on November 6, 1931 to Dorothy and Robert Bruce Ritter. She attended high school at Grier, a boarding school, and at age seventeen she left Pennsylvania to attend the University of Chicago, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts and participated in early civil rights activities. After college she moved to California. While working at the Aerospace Corporation, she met and then married Stanley Schneider on January 27, 1963. The couple bought their first home together in Palos Verdes in 1964. In that same house, they raised their four children and created many special memories with their wonderful neighbors. Although Susan was primarily a homemaker, she was also the bookkeeper for the Palos Verdes Cooperative Nursery School for over 25 years and worked at Rolling Hills/Peninsula High School as a writing aide and Mac lab educator. Once retired, Susan remained close with her Peninsula High School colleagues in their Red Pen Society book club and enjoyed socializing with her friends in the aqua aerobics classes at the San Pedro YMCA. Mrs. Schneider was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Schneider, in August 2008. When living alone became too difficult in December 2011, she moved to Villa Court Assisted Living in San Ramon, CA. In September 2012, with the loving support of her family, she chose to move into her daughter's home for hospice care to allow death with naturalness and comfort. Susan will be fondly remembered for her quirky sense of humor, nonconforming ways, love of the English language, appreciation of music, cooking and sharing recipes, sewing and knitting, and the love and time she gave to her family, friends, and neighbors. Susan is survived by her four siblings, Robert Ritter of Alamo, CA, Laurie Post of Lansdowne, VA, Leslie Anthony of Reston, VA, and Michelle Ritter of Saylorsburg, PA; her daughters, Rachel Hurd of San Ramon, CA and Molly Schneider of Redding, CA; sons, Jonathan Schneider of Rolling Hills Estates, CA and Benjamin Schneider of Decatur, GA; and, seven grandchildren, Daniel Hurd, Adam Hurd, Madeline Hurd, Katherine Kleve, Camilla Schneider, Karen Kleve, and Raphael Schneider. A celebration of her life will be held on January 20, 2013 from 2 to 4 o'clock in the afternoon at her Rancho Palos Verdes home.
