Thomas Roach Obituary

Thomas C. Roach, 85, long time resident of the South Bay, passed away on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at his Riviera home, surrounded by his family. Born in Indio, California on March 20, 1925, he attended St. Clemens Elementary and St. Monica High School, where he played football and baseball. Tom grew up on the beaches of Venice and Santa Monica where he loved surfing and playing volleyball. He served 3 years in the Navy in WWII, teaching swimming and sea survival to recruits at the San Diego Naval Training Center and graduating from Notre Dame Midshipman School. During the war he attended Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, where he played football, and met and married the homecoming queen, Doris Sommer. Moving back to California they bought their first house in the Westchester area of L.A. before settling into the Riviera section of Redondo Beach in the late 50's. Tom and Doris raised 10 children, sending them all through St. Lawrence Martyr Elementary and Bishop Montgomery High School. Tom was very active in the St. Lawrence Church, where he served as usher and board member for 55 years. Always the sports enthusiast, Tom co-founded the Palos Verdes Pop Warner football program, serving as president and coach for over 10 years. He was the "Voice of the Knights" for twenty years, announcing Bishop Montgomery football and basketball games and served as president of the parents and booster clubs at Bishop. A 35 year member of the South Bay Athletic Club, Tom loved their weekly luncheons and the friends he had there. Tom also served on many boards and committees that helped to shape the South Bay area. Tom worked as a sales executive for 3M Company for 30 years, selling abrasives, tapes and adhesives throughout the Los Angeles area and racking up well over a million miles on the freeways of L.A. After retiring in 1982 Tom and Doris spent the next 20 years traveling the world. Tom is survived by his wife of 63 years, Doris; his daughters, Katie, Marion and Patty; his sons, Tom, Jim, Charlie, Steve, Kevin, and Tim; his sister, Rita Hutter of Santa Monica; his seven sons/daughters-in-law; his 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his youngest son, Bob. Funeral services are scheduled for St. Lawrence Martyr Church, 1900 S. Prospect Ave., Redondo Beach on Friday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Viewing and a Rosary are scheduled for Thursday, September 16 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at McCormick Mortuary, 1998 S. Pacific Coast Hwy, Redondo Beach. Burial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Providence Trinity Care Hospice or the Bob Roach Memorial Scholarship Fund, Bishop Montgomery High School. My pop was also a true bigger than life character, so I know how the Roach family feels. Tom was an institution all by himself in Torrance California.

Dear Mrs. Roach and Family: It was so sad to hear of
Mr. Roach's passing. I remember baby sitting the younger Roach's and having dinner once in a while with the entire family. That was always a lot of fun, since I was an only child. I remember Mr. Roach's love of my moms sarma and 3 layer chocolate cake. He was such a special man and will truly be missed by our family.

Dear Doris, So sorry to hear of Tom's passing. He was such a nice guy and full of life like FX. I used to run into him at South End when I exercised in the morning...he was so much more dedicated...I just happened to be reading the obituary as many nurses' do...he was so accomplished...I was so glad I spoke to him at Del's 80th...he looked so good! You both are in my thought's and prayers. Sincerely, Meg McCormick

The Foleys at the opposite end of Vista del Parque (as we grew up through the St Lawrence/Bishop Montgomery years ) loved your wonderful, gregarious father Tom Roach!

Walking to Sunday mass and saying hello as Doris and Tom walked by and so many other memorable park events still still make us smile and at times double over in laughter!
I'll never forget the time Doris and Tom were lined up behind us Foley kids at the Rotunda in the park for a pot luck dinner. Our mom, (Virginia Foley), had baked a lemon drizzle cake and although it might have resembled corn bread, nothing could be remotely close to it's taste.

While standing in the pot luck line, one of our neighbors, Mrs. Bull, took a gigantic piece and bit into this sweet, tart cake and exclaimed to everyone how delicious this "CORN BREAD' tasted!! Your parents and our family members bursted out in laughter!
Thank you Doris and Tom and Roach Kids for the memories!
We love your family! God Bless!
Nancy Foley and the rest of the Gang!

Doris, I just happened to look at The Breeze today and noted that Tom had passed away. Know that even though we are miles away our prayers are with you and your family. I will never forget the time my phone went off at Mass and he clipped me up the side of my head. Never rang again during Mass.

Our thoughts are with your family. We respect Tom Roach so much and think he must have been a great man for raising such a good person as his son Jim.

I was so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. He was a "giant" in the South Bay, in the Church, among the Franciscans, and among our alumni at Bishop Montgomery. He left his legacy and was a legend at St. Lawrence and BMHS. Having taught and ministered there in the 60's and 70's, I was privileged to know him and witness his dedication. As he rests in peace, may the good Lord give comfort & peace to all in his family.
In prayer & sympathy, -- Fr. Ronald Olson, OFM Conv.
