Helen Unrue Obituary
Helen Jean Unrue, a woman of great faith, passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at home with family and loved ones by her side. Helen Jean was a resident of Torrance for 56 years and was 86 when she died. She was born in Wheeling, West Virginia in the home of her parents. She is survived by sons, James Shriver of Fresno, CA and William Shriver (Kathy) of Crestview, FL; and daughters, Dorothy Bishop of Clovis, CA and Ann Kirkpatrick (Tracy) of Torrance, CA. She was the loving grandmother to Roger (Julie), Rachel and John Bishop. She was a very proud great grandmother of Micah, Jesse, Jennifer, Joshua, William and Kaitlyn. She was preceded in death by two wonderful husbands John Shriver and Harold Unrue; parents, William and Grace; brothers, Allan, William, Louis; and sister, Eleanor Albinger. She affectionately became known as Nana by many children she cared for over the years. She was blessed to have Susan Hansen, Michelle and Jennifer Mann and Laurie Laycock who loved her as extended family. She had several careers, owning and operating a beauty salon, a checker in the local grocery store Alpha Beta, working for Polaroid and Honeywell. Her most fulfilling and loving occupation was to be a wonderful mother to her children, being supportive and involved in all their activities. She became the first PTA president of Towers Elementary School in Torrance. She was a life time member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1971 at Playa Linda/Fuchsia Chapter. She was a Member of Honor of Jobs Daughters International, Bethel No. 273 Manhattan Beach, where she served on the Council for 30 years. She was known for her excellent cooking and cake decorating. There was always a place for a friend at the dinner table and never a wedding or birthday cake she could not create. She was an avid reader and well known at the local used book store. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her and at the same time confident that she is at peace with Our Lord. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Rice Mortuary on Wednesday, March 21 from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm. The Service will be held in the Rice Chapel on Thursday, March 22 at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Pacific Crest Cemetery in Redondo Beach.
