Bettie Jo Miller Obituary
Bettie Jo Miller
("Countess von Giggie")
Born June 4, 1926 in Danville KY, formerly of Torrance and Manhattan Beach, died July 7 following a lengthy illness. She was raised by a single mother, attended 8 different schools in 12 years and survived a serious case of rheumatic fever. This beautiful woman fell in love with a soldier on his way to World War II (and the Battle of the Bulge), and her life's treasures were her 57 yr. marriage with him, the letters he wrote her every single day he was overseas and the four children they had. She had other loves too - travel, her country, her southern heritage, chocolate, being Irish, observing traditions and feasts, gardening, the sun and the ocean, needlepoint, sewing circle with friends, keeping abreast of current events, decorating, putting her feet in streams ... and especially doing things for others. She knit hundreds of lap robes for people in convalescent homes, worked with her husband at the voting booths every election day, and did volunteer work at So. Bay Hospital and for Mission Circle 101 (for native American schools) of American Martyrs Catholic Church, where she and her husband attended Mass every day. Preceded in death by her husband Elmer Miller and granddaughter Monica Quaresma , she is survived by her children Fr. Michael Miller of Chino CA; Mary Quaresma of Carlsbad CA; Kathleen Prouty of Torrance CA; and Patricia Goettsch of Torrance CA; sons-in-law Dallas Quaresma and Gregory Goettsch; grandchildren Gregory, Brian, and Nathan Quaresma, Sam and Alison Prouty, and Michael and Andrew Goettsch. Great grandchildren are Zachary, Dallas, Gabrielle, Holden, Bianca, Madeleine and Isaac Quaresma. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org). Visitation (4-7 pm) and Vigil Service (7 pm) will be this Thursday July 10 at White and Day Colonial Mortuary, Redondo Beach, CA. Funeral Mass is at American Martyrs Catholic Church, Manhattan Beach on Friday at 7:00 pm. Private interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery. Pray ... but don't be sorry for her. She's with her husband and with Jesus.
