John (Mickey) Jelsma was born on January 5, 1942 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska and moved to the Torrance area when he was 2. Mickey passed away within 7 months of being diagnosed with cancer on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 2:01pm PST at home in Torrance in the company of his wife, Rita; sons, John and Jarrad; daughter Tiffany; long time friend and adopted sister, Dolly;, and Omica, Jarrad's girlfriend at his side letting him know we wished him to be pain free and it was ok to move on. He is and will be missed very much by everyone. Mickey was in the Army, based out of Anchorage, Alaska, and later managed the family business, Woody's Liquor & Market. He had such a passion for deep sea fishing and loved the ocean. He probably loved it as much as loving and being loved by all of his family. Mickey was such a well-liked man and known for his quick, witty comments on anything and everything you can think of. If he picked on you with his witty comments you knew you were well liked… well maybe not at first. He was such a help to all his friends and neighbors who needed any kind of handyman or woodwork. We really wish to thank all of the neighbors for their support during these difficult months, and especially the past few days. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Rita; son, John (fiancée Sherrie); son, Jarrad (girlfriend Omica); daughter, Tiffany (boyfriend Dan); and adopted sister, Dolly. He was blessed with 9 grandchildren: Chelsea, Casey, Cailey, Timothy, Aaron, Shane and Ariel, along with Thomas and Taylor, who are newest members of the family. A memorial for Mickey is being planned in 2-3 weeks. Any donations may be made to the
or Braille Institute. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
