Thomas O'brien Obituary
Thomas O'Brien

On May 29, 2012, Thomas O'Brien, a retired city of Torrance programmer analyst and a heart patient, died peacefully at home in his sleep. His wife was close by and his dog snuggled at his feet. Helped by his son, Tim, Tom had spent a wonderful Memorial Day evening on his last fishing trip, casting off from his wheelchair at Redondo Beach Pier with family around him. Tom's last words to his daughter Heidi were, "Thank you. I love you! It was a good day."

Born June 14, 1940, Tom grew up in Denver. After service in the Coast Guard, he married Carla Buckman of Berkeley in 1961 and began college. Tom's aerospace career took him across the world before the family settled in Torrance; and his passion for computers started with a Heathkit which he and the children built in the garage. The accidental death of his son Tommy at 17 was the family's most painful experience.

Tom loved fishing, reading, computers, bridge, bowling, and playing Santa for children. Most of all, he loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Carla; son, Timothy (Donna Jo); daughter, Heidi (Vincent Brooks); grandchildren, Chris and Billy Edwards, Madeline and Jessica O'Brien; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Lauren, Lindsay, Rebecca and Robin Brooks, and Jamie Hackett. His brother, James Calhoun lives in Denver. A memorial service was held at Trinty Lutheran Church, San Pedro. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
