John William Retsek, 75, died peacefully on November 1, 2012 at his San Pedro, California home. Mr. Retsek was born July 4, 1937, in Michigan City, Indiana, to John and Berneth (Cash) Retseck. John was a true renaissance man, recently retiring after 43 years as Art Director for KCET Public Television, Hollywood, California where he won numerous awards and accolades for his productions. In 1973 he co-founded the very popular "The Car Show" that is still broadcasted on KPFK 90.7 FM Radio Pacifica, North Hollywood, California. He also wrote for several prestigious car magazines and he especially enjoyed grand prix racing. He had a life long love affair with sailboat, racing that began on Lake Michigan as a young boy. For many years up until recently, he successfully raced the waters of "Hurricane Gulch" off the shore of his home port of San Pedro. John is survived by his loving wife, Maureen, two daughters, Amanda and Stephanie; one son, Dylan; two grandchildren, Finn and Sloan. Also surviving are John's two brothers, Ronald, James and one sister, Sharon. There is no question that John was the patriarch of the family. His loving kindness and gentle ways will be missed, but his spirit will never be forgotten. In honor of his 1978 shipboard marriage to Maureen, a memorial has been planned for Friday, November 16 from 1-3 pm at Cabrillo Plaza in San Pedro. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the
in John's name. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
