Dr. James Vernon Traughber
Passed away December 21, 2012. Born April 16, 1923 in Nashville, TN. He is preceded in death by first wife, Diana Spicknall, second wife Patsy Hensman, and son, James Vernon, Jr. He is survived by sons, Christopher (Gail), Mark (Marta), Bradley (Lucinda) and Michael; grandchildren, Zane, Patrick, Jason, Nora, and Jeffrey. He has been a resident of San Pedro since 1956. Graduated from Franklin HS 1941, started at UCLA 1942, then served in the 13th Armored Division Unit in Europe in WWII. He was awarded 2 Battle Stars and a Bronze Star. Lifelong member of VFW (Lomita). Graduated from UCLA 1948, Masters USC 1954 and Doctorate in Education BYU 1972. Teacher, Vice-principal, first Principal at Taper Ave School in San Pedro, and Administrator for LAUSD starting in 1948, retired in 1979. Professor of Education at Pepperdine University 1953-1979. His passion was auto racing and was involved in 20 "Indy 500" races from 1979-1998. Member of the "Indy Old Timers Club". A memorial is being planned for a later date.
