Catherine "Kay" Trimm Obituary
Catherine "Kay" Trimm

Catherine "Kay" Trimm passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of January 5, 2013, with all of the class and dignity she had during her lifetime.
Kay was born Catherine Elaine McKenzie in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin and spent idyllic summers with her brothers and many cousins at her grandparents' farm. There she developed a great love for animals of all kinds. She attended the State Teacher's College in Whitewater, Wisconsin and earned a degree in education. Upon graduation, Kay bravely moved west and began her career teaching primary grades in San Bernardino, California. There she created many lifelong friendships. Most importantly, she met and married her husband, John Trimm on October 15th, 1955.
Kay was a passionate teacher, and soon landed a position teaching kindergarten in the Manhattan Beach City Schools, where she was to remain until her retirement. She taught at Ladera, Grandview, Meadows and Pacific and was always a popular teacher. She attended Pepperdine University and earned her master's degree in education in 1973.Throughout her children's lifetimes they would hear others say: "Mrs. Trimm is your mom? She was my favorite teacher!"
Upon retirement, Kay had the time to pursue some of the things she loved to do - paint, volunteer, play bridge and travel. She was a talented artist and her favorite medium was watercolor. Her paintings could often be found at art shows around the beach cities, awarded with ribbons.
She volunteered at the South Bay Auxiliary for Children's hospital L.A.shortly after her retirement. She spent hours at their thrift store in Hermosa Beach sorting, cleaning, tagging and running the register, and was proud to be part of one of the oldest and most successful hospital auxiliaries. She looked forward to the Auxiliary Holiday Boutique Luncheon every Christmas and never missed a year. She made many friends there and was delighted to find that there were quite a few bridge players in the group. Kay thoroughly enjoyed playing bridge, sometimes playing several times a week. If she didn't get enough bridge in with her girlfriends, she and husband John would entertain friends for a bridge weekend in their Manhattan Beach home.
One of Kay's most defining attributes was her love of travel. She and John journeyed all over the world, from Australia and the South Pacific to almost every country in Europe. She explored the Western Hemisphere from Alaska all the way to Cape Horn and points in between. The experiences she had and the friends she made on those trips would bring a smile to her face whenever she thought of them.
Kay will be missed by many, but especially her family including her husband of 57 years John Trimm; her brother, Robert McKenzie; her two children, Denise (Trimm) Arand and Christopher Trimm; her two granddaughters, Elizabeth Hansen and Suzanne McDonnell and her great-granddaughter and namesake, Molly Kay Hansen.
In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests a donation to the South Bay Auxiliary for Children's Hospital L.A., (sent: c/o Treasurer, 14 Sausalito Circle East, Manhattan Beach, CA 92066) or the Salvation Army in memory of Catherine "Kay" Trimm.
