I met Phil and the Scott family in Budapest, Hungary, of all places, during their European family vacation in 1984 along with family friend, John Sullivan. We ended up staying together in a youth hostel in the Austrian capital and shared a fun time touring the city. Phil was truly a family man dedicated to his wife and four children. I would like to extend my much belated condolences to Doris and family. John Cooper [email protected]

Phil Scott was a wonderful role model. He taught me to work hard and compete hard. He was a kind man who cared for all of us on the YMCA swim team. For me he was more than a coach, he was like a father and I owe him much appreciation for my successes in life. I sure feel bad for Doris and his family and all his friends. We sure lost a Great Man. Thank You Phil for so much. Rest in Peace.

I had the pleasure and privilege to swim with the San Pedro YMCA boys swim teams (later it became the San Pedro and Peninsula YMCA) from 1956 until 1967 with Phil Scott as our coach. Although we did not have a state of the art swimming pool at the old Beacon Street Y, Phil was able to build teams that routinely placed in the national swim rankings. In addition to building successful swim teams, he helped mold and mentor numerous young men. Phil led by example and was always willing to sit down with his swimmers and pass on his philosophy of life. We all owe a great deal of our success to the time, energy and sacrifice that Phil invested in us to help us become the adults we are today. He will always have a place in my heart and he will be sorely missed.

Phil is one of the nicest people we have ever known. His endless hours of dedication to the San Pedro Library is beyond belief. He is truly irreplaceable. Thanks to Phil, many other volunteers gave of themselves as well. It will be difficult to see the Library without thinking of Phil and Doris, who also gave so much in helping Phil. Coach Scott put together a fantastic swim team in the OLD YMCA...20 yard long, 4 lane wide pool, indoors and chlorine was in abundance. While we swimmers worked to get better, he sweated in the humidity and evaporating chlorine while creating a world class team. The Big Guys on the team were world class and Phil's coaching got em that way, dry land and pool, never yelling in anger. A good life, well lived. Any of us that can come close to his example should be pleased.

Phil Scott was my swim Coach at the old San Pedro "Y" from 1956 to 1958. He was the best swim coach I ever had. Phil invented timing, pace, lights that he attached to the lane lines. Coach told us to catch up with the lights and if we got close he would speed up the lights. He did not coach all the fancy stuff. Just train hard. The best advice he ever gave me was to swim faster. Our team was coached so well that we were wiping up the pool in meets with college ranked teams. Best of all Phil was a wonderful person. Thanks Coach for helping to lead me on the right path. I still swim a mile four days a week. Tomorrow I will be swimming the Pier to Pier swim and I dedicate my swim to your life well lived.

Mr, Scott was my gym teacher in the early 70's. Years later, I would see him at the YMCA on Sunday's with his kids for family swim. I enjoyed helping him at Big C Home Center. He was a good man.

I remember "Mr. Scott" well from my years at Dana and working in the PE office. He was a great guy and a good and well-liked teacher. My mother and Mr. Scott were classmates together at SPHS. I'm so sorry for your loss and trust that you have tons of great memories and stories to share.

He was such a kind man. I remember him well from Dana and thought about him over the years. I went to school with his daughters. Sending prayers to his generous loving family.
