MARY GALLAWAY SHAFFER LEAVELLE
TROY — Mary Gallaway Shaffer Leavelle, age 86, of Troy, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at her residence after an extended illness.
She was born on Oct. 10, 1927 in Piqua, to the late Samuel Floyd and Margaret (Evans) Gallaway. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William R. Shaffer, in 1956.
Mary is survived by her husband of 50 years, Joel D. Leavelle; four children, Sheryl L. Shaffer of Columbus; William Robert (Darlene) Shaffer II of Troy; Mary Joelene Leavelle of Columbus; James P. (Karen) Leavelle of Cleveland; one brother, Glenn Gallaway of Elkhart, Ind.; and six grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her first husband, Mrs. Leavelle was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Vaughn and Frances Peters; and one brother, James Gallaway.
She was a graduate of Piqua High School and a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Troy. She was past Secretary of the Troy Figure Skating Club; Legal Secretary to Howard Swinehart from 1955-1966; Genealogist Volunteer at the Hayner Cultural Center for the Historical Society; and Founding Mother of the WACO Historical Society.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Baird Funeral Home, Troy, with the Rev. Dr. Keith Wagner of the St. John's United Church of Christ officiating. Interment will follow in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Friday and from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
