PIQUA — Paul D. Bates, 66, of Piqua, passed unexpectedly on Saturday December 1, 2018 at his residence.

He was born May 17, 1952, in Piqua, OH, to the late Robert L. Bates and the late Marlene L. (York) Kessler.

Surviving him is his best friend and love of his life, Jeanie, whom he married on August 12, 1972 at St. Mary Church, Piqua, OH. They spent a beautiful 51 years together creating a home filled with abundant love, laughter and memories that will be cherished forever.

At the heart of his life was his family. He is survived by two daughters and son in-law: Molly and Brian Lord of Powell, OH, Laura Bates of Piqua, OH and two sons and daughter in-laws: Casey and Brittany Bates and Brady and Rachel Bates both of Piqua, OH. He was the world's best "Grampy" to seven precious grandchildren: Riley and Carter Lord, Parker and Stella Bates, and Nora, Leo and Eliza Bates. He is also survived by brother: David and Margaret Shawler-Bates, Piqua, OH, three sisters: Connie and Dennis Tennery, Piqua, OH, Vickie and James Couchot, Piqua, OH, Karla and Don Harmon, Gettysburg, OH and brother-in-law Ron Tate, Piqua, OH, in-laws: Sally and Terry Barker, Helen Thompson, Jackie and Denis Shinall, Valerie Jordan and Michael Brush and Thomas and Tana Jordan.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert L. Bates and one sister, Cathy J. Tate.

Paul was a 1970 graduate of Piqua Central High School. He joined the Air Force in 1971 and was a Sergeant stationed at Kwang Ju Air Base, South Korea and Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota until 1975. He attended Edison State College before going on to work for the Val Decker Packing Company and Friendly' s; he then began his career with the US Postal Service where he retired as Postmaster of Bradford, OH.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at St. Mary Church with Rev. Fr. Daniel Hunt and Rev. Fr. Ethan Moore co-celebrant. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua, OH with full military honors by the Veterans Elite Tribute Squad. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Melcher-Sowers funeral home, Piqua, OH.
