TROY — ARTHUR W. SMITH, JR., 83 of Troy, passed away on Monday, May 19, 2014, at Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy, following an extended illness. He was born in Kenova, W. Va., on March 25, 1931, to the late Arthur W. and Nellie (Malcom) Smith, Sr. His wife of more than 59 years, Ada C. (Ball) Smith, survives.
Arthur is also survived by three children and their spouses: Pamela and Scott Simpson of Walled Lake, Mich.; Arthur W. and Lynn Smith III of Troy; and Joy and Robert Kobe of Overland Park, Kan.; seven grandchildren: Joshua, Jennifer, Brandon, Kenny, Stephanie, Caitlin and Laura; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters: Violet Deskins, Wilbur Smith, Francis Hern, Ormal Smith, Bob Smith and Betty Ferguson.
Arthur was a graduate of Ceredo Kenova High School, Kenova, W. Va., and Huntington Business School. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Piqua. Arthur was a devoted Sunday School director with Southern Baptist churches for more than half of his life. He retired from GATX in 1991 after more than 40 years of faithful service.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 23, 2014, at Victory Baptist Church in Piqua, with Pastor Phillip P. DeLorme officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Troy. Friends may call for one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Baird Funeral Home of Troy.
