WEST MILTON — Elwood E. "Woody" Walker, 84, of West Milton, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Piqua Manor Nursing Home. He was born Dec. 19, 1929, in Shanksville, Pa., to the late Gladen and Etta (Lambert) Walker. He married Jean Rae (Halverson) Walker; she preceded him in death on April 3, 2001.
Woody will be missed and remembered by his son, Scott (Linda) Walker of Port Charlotte, Fla.; two grandchildren, Amanda and Michael, four great-grandchildren; a brother, Lee (Janet) Walker of California; and a sister, Lorraine (Wayne) Shaffer of Pittsburgh, Pa. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Walker, in 2012.
Woody served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1956 during the Korean War, then served two years in the Air Force Reserve with the Strategic Air Command. He began his career with Trans World Airlines (TWA) in 1956, working as a crew chief and lead mechanic until his retirement in 1989.
Woody had a lifelong love of flight, and was a pilot for 55 years. He was recognized in 2009 with the Wright Master Pilot Award for completing 50 consecutive years as a pilot. In 2002, he was also awarded the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award for 50 years as an aircraft mechanic. He also instructed over 800 students in the in the art of flying. He was a member of the West Milton American Legion Post #487, the WACO Museum and Historical Society, and a lifetime member of the Aircraft Owners Pilots Association.
Funeral services to honor his life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2014, at Hale-Sarver Family Funeral Home, 284 N. Miami St., West Milton, with Pastor Jerry Collins officiating. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Somerset County Memorial Park in Somerset, Pa.
