PIQUA - Donna J. Knick, 84, of Piqua, passed away on July 27 after a brief battle with cancer at Piqua Manor with her family by her side.

Donna was born in Froid, Montana on May 14, 1930, one of seven children of Nels and Clara (Smith) Nelsen. She married John Knick in June of 1948, in Kalispell, Montana. The two lived in Montana before moving to Piqua, Ohio to be near family. Donna worked many jobs in Piqua, but enjoyed most her work at Piqua Engineering, where she made a lifelong friend, Nola Harmon.

Donna was an avid reader and enjoyed reading the daily paper and staying on top of current events. Her home was a central gathering place to many family members and she enjoyed the chatter of her family around her. Her dry sense of humor and wry eyebrow-raises will be well-remembered. Donna had a kind heart with an especially soft spot for animals; she enjoyed feeding many stray cats that came to her door over the years, especially "Yellow", who made his home in her backyard. Donna was proud of her Danish heritage and enjoyed sharing genealogical information with her grandchildren. Donna's tough, pioneering spirit remained with her to the end.

Donna is survived by four daughters, Kathleen Knick of Celina, Deborah Knick of Piqua, Robin (Keith) Wheelock of Beavercreek, and Dona (Steve) Maack of De Pere, Wis; as well as many grandchildren: Blaine Schmidlapp and wife Marcy Linder of Cincinnati, Brent (Kerry) Schmidlapp of Celina, Scott (April) Wheelock of Lebanon, Brian (Cassie) Wheelock of Kettering, Jenna (Rob) Ralston of Arnold, California, Janette Maack and husband Ralph Black of Vacaville, California, and Julia Maack of De Pere, Wisconsin. She is further survived by her great-grandchildren, Brandon and Kassidy Schmidlapp of Celina, Emily Wheelock of Lebanon, and Fiona Maack of Vacaville, California. Donna had many brothers and sisters and is survived by two of them; Janice Elvsaas of Froid, Montana, and Gail Ferderer of Sundance, Wyoming. Additionally, she is survived by good friend Emma Pohlschneider.

Preceding Donna in death is her parents Nels and Clara Nelsen, husband John Knick, and brothers and sisters including Delbert Nelsen, Abby Overland, Clayton Nelsen, and Alton Nelsen.
