SEWICKLEY, Pa. - Doris Fuller Esteban, 76, a resident of Sewickley, Pa. for 48 years, passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2012.
Born Nov. 16, 1935, in Piqua, she is survived by her husband, Francis; her son, Miguel; her daughters, Maria and Elena; her daughter-in-law, Michelle; her son-in-law, Daniel Hollister; and her granddaughters, Maeve Mawhinney and Flora Esteban-Hollister.
Doris graduated from the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. A poet, librettist, ASCAP member, founding member of Grace Anglican Church in Edgeworth, Pa. and of the 20-year-old writer's collective, "First Word," Doris wrote several books for musical production, including "Travelin' to the Promised Land," "Hadassah" and "Only Me," which was staged in 2009 in Pittsburgh. She had an abiding love of music and literature, especially Broadway composers such as Cole Porter, Steven Sondheim and Oscar Hammerstein and authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien, George Macdonald and Madeline L'Engle. Recently, she had been writing a fictional piece which included a series of letters from a gnome named Ketchum who acted as a mentor and friend to children. An avid nature lover, Doris had a lifelong passion for watching and listening to birds and gardening and creating floral works of art.
She was well known for welcoming people into her home and befriending and helping many. Her reputation in this regard proceeds her. Doris was greatly loved and will be greatly missed by her family and her wide circle of friends.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Grace Anglican Church in Edgeworth, Pa. A reception to follow.
