Art Burmeister Obituary

Art Burmeister of Longmont died unexpectedly Jan. 8 at his home. He was 62. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Linda Scherer, and many family and friends who loved him. Art had a big heart. He loved his family, a challenge, and the outdoors. He was a great cook, created rugs on his loom, and took joy in biking, skiing, and hiking. He had also been an avid rock climber and kayaker. He and Linda took many trips, which he enjoyed. Art will be missed greatly by his sisters, Karolyn, Kristin , and Barbara; his brothers, Louie and Bobby; and their families. He is also survived by loving in-laws and their families. A celebration of life is planned for the spring. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in honor of Art to the charity of your choice

My sorrow is over whelming. I am speechless. I have sadness over the fact that he will never know how much he was loved and the impact he made on many lives.

Kathy and I want to express our deepest sympathy to Linda and Art's family. I met Art in school in 1975 and had many fun times together. He always had a smile and a kind word, and I wish we would have stayed closer in the past few years. I will always remember the fun times and riding with him on his Honda 750 through Boulder Canyon.

We are searching for words where there aren't any. It is difficult to convey our feelings of loss. Our lives are better because of Art's friendship. This past summer, at the Jersey Shore, Brian and Art were laughing so hard they were crying at the depth of each other's sarcasm. That is how we will remember Art, in laughter and good times. Love Brian and Sue

I raise a toast to your Life, Art - my best friend for more than 42 to years. I hope you are forever riding at a slight down hill in your big gear to keep your speed up and the load easy. I shall miss you more and more with each passing day. Mr. B.

I met Art in June of 1975 when I arrived in Boulder to begin studies at CU. We became friends immediately, and though we lost touch for many years after graduation, we rekindled that friendship in recent years. I shall miss him very much.

Linda,

Art was one of the most fun people to be with that I have ever known. We three -- Art, Jeanette and I -- laughed our way through tough times and tough weather on our bike rides. Art was unfailingly up, and definitely helped Jeanette and me on our bad days. Don't know if he told you of the first ride we had with Art on his Carbent. We were cruising along in Kansas three abreast when a young man made what we thought of as a "get out of my way oldsters!" pass. We remarked on it, and urged Art to "go get 'em." He accelerated up to the young man, rode behind him for a bit, then SMOKED him, racing down the highway past one of the SAGS. After a bit Art turned back to us, grinning madly. We stopped at the SAG, and Art was swamped by much younger riders who wanted to know what sort of rocket ship he was pedaling. We grinned when remembering that perfect moment over many years.

Art was bright, eclectic and just plain fun to be with. We will miss his droll sense of humor, his growl and his support on the ride.

Downhills and tailwinds, Art.
