Harlan Bartram

Harlan Gustav Hans (Bart) Bartram of Boulder, Colorado died Monday December 24th at the age of 87. Bart was a unique and much loved man and though we can list the achievements and outlines of his life, he is best remembered for the mischievous twinkle in his eye, the firm clasp of his hand, the warmth of his embrace, and the generosity of his spirit. Bart was born April 9, 1925 in Marble, Colorado, the son of German immigrants Ewald and Mathilda Bartram. He spent most of his youth in Colorado, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado, and later did graduate work at Cornell University. Bart had a gift for mathematics and a deep love for both learning and teaching. After years spent in university teaching, he realized that his true passion was in the education of young children. In 1970 Bart, along with his partner Patricia Baker, established Bixby School in Boulder, Colorado. Bixby was truly born of Bart's deep understanding of, and respect for, the varied ways in which individual children learn. He fostered creativity in both the teachers and the students at Bixby by creating an environment in which all could thrive. Although he retired from full time teaching, he remained an active part of the Bixby community and a mentor to its staff until the time of his death. Bixby is his legacy. Bart had 4 children, Carlan, Peter, Michael, and Deidre, with his former wife Patricia Foran Bartram. He had a long and loving partnership with Patricia Baker, who was at his side when he gently and peacefully died on Christmas Eve. He is survived by his children, his sister Margaret Mason, his grandchildren Robin Bartram and wife Yuki, Sky Osawa, Beth Davis and husband Craig, Jeff Bartram and wife Cassie Fede. He is also survived by 4 great grandchildren, Jake Davis, Leah Davis, Isabelle Bartram - Fede and Jackson Bartram-Fede. He was also loved by, and will be greatly missed by, Rebecca Bayne, Joanne Bartram, the staff of Bixby School, and countless Bixby graduates. At Bart's request, no services are planned. A memorial gathering to celebrate Bart's life will take place at a future date. For anyone wishing to remember Bart with a gift, contributions may be made to the Bixby Future Fund, care of The Community Foundation Boulder County 1123 Spruce Street Boulder, CO 80302
