Lawrence Frey

Obituary Condolences Gallery

Lawrence ("Larry", "Saleh") Wayne Frey passed away at Porter Adventist Hospital on March 12, 2013 after an illness of some months. Larry was born in Cedaredge, Colorado, on June 20, 1948. The son of two physicians, Larry graduated Saludatorian of his high school, and was admitted to MIT on scholarship. However, he preferred to pursue a musical career. He performed and taught classical and popular piano, guitar, and other instruments for over 40 years in the Boulder area, and became a fixture in the Boulder music scene. He was regularly asked to do the intermission performance for the Stars of Tomorrow competition, as an emeritus winner in classical piano. Larry's earlier life included riding freight trains across the country, working on fishing and crabbing boats in Alaska, and performing solo and with groups in many different venues. He adopted the Muslim faith, and lectured on Islam and Sufim to lay and Christian groups. For many years Saleh lived in a small cabin in the mountains, before moving to Boulder. Saleh was loved by his family, his students, his mosque, and by the large number of people who were in his musical circle. He is survived by his mother, Louise, and his brothers, Robert and Will. There will be a memorial service at the Unitarian Church, 5001 Pennsylvania, Boulder, on Sunday, March 24, from 2:30 to 5:30. Please bring instruments, food, drink, and friendship. All are welcome.
