Michael George Nicholls, formerly of Boulder, passed away April 7 at home in Windsor, Colorado. He was 64.
Mike was born on May 6, 1948 in Quincy, Massachusetts to James E. and Betty (Martell) Nicholls. After graduating from high school in Mankato, Minnesota, he attended the Colorado School of Mines, interrupting his college education to perform alternative service in Chicago, Illinois during the Vietnam War. He then attended the
University of Illinois
Dental School, obtaining his DDS in 1977 and doing a one-year residency in general dentistry at the University of Chicago. During this time he met and married Dale A. Reeves. They had two sons.
In 1978, he and his family moved to Boulder, Colorado, where Mike opened a dental practice. As a dentist, despite his casual uniform of jeans, Pendleton shirts, and Frye boots, he was dedicated to ensuring that his patients obtained the best possible care. He also enjoyed hiking, climbing, skiing, and other outdoor pursuits. He retired from dentistry due to a work-related illness in 1990, but continued to enjoy Colorado's many recreational opportunities. He also returned to his interest in geology, doing field work for Edcon and other geological companies, work that took him far from home to places as remote as Papua New Guinea and Cameroon. He later opened his own geological consulting firm, Eagle Rock, in partnership with geophysicist Wendy Weiland. In
1997, he married Alyson K. Johnson, and moved with her to his beloved Colorado mountains. After a number of moves, they settled in Windsor, where they lived for the past six years.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Alyson, sons Robert (Leslie) and Jonathan, granddaughter Shania Nicholls, stepdaughters Rachel and Ivey, and brother James Nicholls and his family.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, April 19, 2013 at 3pm at the Timberline Church in Fort Collins, CO.
