Michel Van Duym Obituary
The world lost a wonderfully talented and incredibly good-hearted person in the prime of his life. Michel Benoit D'Aoust Van Duym died in a tragic cycling accident in Lyons, CO on May 11, 2013. Michel was born on June 25, 1966 to Joan and Jean-Jacques D'Aoust in New Haven, CT. His early years were spent in Paris, France; Aurora, NY; Syracuse, NY; and Helena, MT. He graduated from Capital High School in Helena in 1985 and from Willamette University in 1989 with a degree in political science. As a child Michel was happy, fun-loving, adventurous, kind and generous. He excelled in tennis, downhill skiing, hiking, and loved most sports. After college he lived briefly in Seattle, where he met his future wife and soul-mate, Carrie Lynn Fischer. His love of the Rocky Mountains brought them to Boulder in 1992. They were married on the top of Flagstaff Mountain in 1994. They initially lived in Nederland and then moved to Boulder. He worked in sales for many years at companies in the Boulder area, most recently as Associate Director of Business Development at GHX. He loved the mountains and his leisure time was spent hiking, running, skiing, and cycling - all shared with Carrie. Michel was a kind, loving, gregarious and confident person who loved life and lived it to its fullest. His family, friends and colleagues were shocked and saddened by his tragic, untimely death. He leaves his wife, Carrie Van Duym; his mother, Joan D'Aoust; his father, Jean-Jacques D'Aoust; his step-father, Hidde Van Duym; his brother, Pierre D'Aoust and nieces, McClain and Sydney D'Aoust; Aunt and Uncle, Lois and Merle Gaugler; cousins Lynn Jackson, Jeffrey Jackson and Diane Larribee; mother-in-law Margaret Fischer; brother-in-law, Edward Fischer and his wife; and sister-in-law, Patricia Cloonan and her family. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Michel will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Boulder at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 18th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Michel's honor to Bicycle Colorado at www.bicyclecolo.org.
