Monte Smith Obituary
Monte was born in Denver, Colorado to Earl B and Betty Ross Smith. His early years were spent in Leadville where his parents were in business. They moved to Englewood and Monte attended school there thru high school. There he met the love of his life, the girl he would later marry (Bernadine Kuehn) and spend the next 63 years with. They raised four beautiful children, Vickie Williamson (Steve), Vana Surmanian (Michael), Valori Egan (John) and Michael Bland Smith (Debbie). They have 3 grandchildren: Zachary Culp, Katherine Jameson and Cristina Smith. Monte earned a Bachelor's degree from CU Boulder and taught school in Boulder for three years. He was the Director of Youth activities for the City of Boulder and initiated the Junior Ranger Program. Later in his career he was hired by CU's Athletic Department as Assistant Trainer and later became the Head Trainer. After serving six years in that capacity he was lured to Chapman University in Orange, California to initiate Chapman's Athletic Training Education program (ATEP) and served with distinction as a professor, mentor and head athletic trainer from 1972 to 1992. He worked tirelessly to develop the Athletic Training Major, while providing health care to thousands of student athletes during his 20 year career at Chapman. ATEP continues in the fine academic tradition that Monte initiated in 1974 with the program achieving its initial national accreditation in 2004 and now supporting more than 90 undergraduate students majoring in Athletic Training In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Chapman University Monte Smith Endowment Fund, One University Drive, Orange, California 92866 or to Hospice Care of Boulder and Broomfield Counties. Services will be held at Darrell Howe Mortuary, 1701 West South Boulder Road, Lafayette Co. at 11:00 am Saturday December 15, 2012. Celebration of Monte's life to follow.
