James Burton Skarstad, beloved brother, father, grandfather, and friend, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, of natural causes. Jim was born on February 6, 1924, in Argyle, Minnesota, son of Alfred and Gena Skarstad. He grew up in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, where he was president of his high school class. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Business Administration. He married Connie Monson in Denver in 1949, and was a founding member of the Mountain View Friends Meeting (Quakers) in Denver. He was a leader in the field of medical group administration, including innovations in computerized medical records. He managed clinics in Ellensburg, Washington, Ogden, Utah, and Longmont, Colorado. In 1967 he was the president of the Medical Group Management Association. He was active in the NAACP, the ACLU, and served as a McGovern delegate to the 1972 Democratic National Convention. He was a draft counselor for conscientious objectors during the Vietnam War, and remained a committed pacifist his entire life. Since childhood, he was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed playing a wide ranging repertoire, from Chopin, Grieg and Gershwin, to Art Tatum and Broadway show tunes. He was happiest when he was at the keyboard, and he shared his playing with family, friends, and countless organizations. He loved to sing in choirs and barbershop quartets. He was an ardent stamp collector, and was the president of both the Boulder and Longmont Stamp clubs. He was predeceased by Connie, whom he loved for 61 years, and is survived by his sister, Marilyn Small (Wally), six children, John, Brian (Louise), Bill (Debbie), Jill, Carol, and Norman (Cyndi), and seven grandchildren: William, John, Samuel, Russell, Kevin, Anna, and Maren. His kindness, good humor, intelligence and quiet dignity will be missed by all who knew him. Memorial donations may be made to the American Friends Service Committee.
