Peter Weil

Obituary Condolences

Peter Henry Weil of Lafayette, CO, died peacefully at home Saturday, August 17, surrounded by his family. He was 79.

Peter was born November 20, 1933, in New York, NY, the third son of Henrietta S. and Frank L. Weil. He was a graduate of Horace Mann School, Princeton University, and Harvard Law School.

On December 18, 1960, Peter married Helen F. Kolodkin of Columbus, GA, who survives him. Together they raised two children, Karen (Edward Kaplan) of Louisville, CO, and Frank (Sherri) of Boulder, CO. He is also survived by his two brothers, John (Joan) of Bloomfield Hills, MI, and Thomas (Dianne) of Wellesley Hills, MA; three grandsons, David Weil Markus (Alex Brinton) of Saratoga Springs, NY, and Jonah and Ethan Weil of Boulder, CO; a large and loving extended family; and a wide circle of friends.

Peter practiced law in New York for more than 35 years, briefly first at his father's firm, Weil, Gotshal & Manges and then at Kaye Scholer where he was a partner, head of the firm's banking division and its leading authority on asset based lending.

He and Helen retired to Boulder in 1995 to enjoy the Rocky Mountain lifestyle that was a love of Peter's since his childhood days as a camper at Cheley Colorado Camps in Estes Park, CO.

Peter's other lifelong passion was classical music. He was active in the Adopt-a-Student program at the University of Colorado School of Music. A long-time board member of the Colorado Music Festival, Peter chaired the committee that brought music director Michael Christie to Boulder. And he was himself a very accomplished pianist.

During his life, Peter enjoyed travel to all seven continents, good food and wine, and widespread fame for his awesome chocolate sauce. Family and friends are invited to an informal open house celebration of Peter's life at his and Helen's home on Saturday, August 24, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research or to the "CUF Weil Fund for Faculty Excellence" at the Colorado University Foundation, c/o College of Music, UCB 301, University of Colorado Boulder, Boulder CO 80309.
