Dorothy Burns

Obituary Condolences

Dorothy H. Burns of Boulder, CO passed away August 22, 2013. Dorothy was born on January 29, 1927 in Palmer, KS to Herman and Anna (Lindhorst) Hiesterman. She attended Linn High School in Linn, KS and continued her schooling at Brown Macky Secretarial School. In 1948, she married Christopher J. Burns in Salina, KS. Dorothy was secretary to the Commander of St. John's Military Academy in Salina, KS. In 1950 Dorothy & Christopher moved to Boulder, CO to start his 30 year career as a professor in the School of Journalism. From 1950 - 1952 Dorothy was the secretary to the Dean of Music at CU Boulder. She was a member of both Grace Lutheran Church and the Boulder Elks Club. Dorothy was raised in Kansas on the family farm in the height of the Depression and from that upbringing learned to become self-sufficient. She was a 50 year survivor of MS. Dorothy was a dear and loving mother who will be deeply missed. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband; son Christopher M. Burns; brothers Emil Hiesterman, Edwin Hiesterman and Lawrence Hiesterman and sisters Hilda Hiesterman (Rau) and Clara Hiesterman (Stohs). She is survived by her son Paul L. Burns of Boulder, CO; brother Herman Hiesterman of Quinter, KS; daughter-in-law Leigh Ann Burns-Lelivelt; grandchildren Joseph C. Burns, Heath H.Coffman & Heather M. Lelivelt; and 2 great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Friday, September 6, 2013, 10am at Green Mountain Cemetery in Boulder. In lieu of flowers, contributions in honor of Dorothy H. Burns may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, nationalmssociety.org/donate.
