Dr. Matthew Mezger
and Mary Patricia Hughes
Dr. Matthew Mezger and Mary Patricia Hughes passed away together on Tuesday, May 28, 2013.
Matt and Pat met at Carroll College in Helena, Mont., and were married on May 28, 1983, in Duluth, Minn. They lived briefly in San Diego during Matt's residency before moving to Sacramento where they resided for over 25 years and raised their three children Madeline, Thomas and John.
Matt graduated from the UC Davis Medical School and went on to practice medicine at Capitol Nephrology, co-owned and operated dialysis clinics in Woodland and Dixon, and was very active in the Sacramento community.
Pat was a licensed family therapist who spent her days caring for her children and creating a welcoming space for family and friends to gather and spend time together. Her generous spirit was rooted in her family, friends and community.
In addition to her children, Pat is survived by: sisters, Cathie (Steve) Trachsel, Duluth, Minn., Lisa (Tim) Zellmer, Edina, Minn.; brothers, David (Carol) Hughes, Duluth, Minn., John (Deb) Hughes, Jeff (Nada) Hughes, both of Richfield, Minn., and Doug (Susan) Hughes, St. Louis Park, Minn.; and 13 nieces and nephews. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Jeanne Hughes.
In addition to his children, Matt is survived by: his mother, Rosalie Mezger, 101 years, of Woodland; sisters, Ann "Muvvie" (Steve) Marks, Woodland, Michelle (Brett) Wark, Sydney, Australia; and brothers, Dan (Ellen) and Mark (Kerry) Mezger, Woodland, and Tom, (MaryLynn), Parker, Colo.; and 15 nieces and nephews. Matt was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Mezger.
A memorial mass celebrating Matt and Pat's lives will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 4, in the Saint Ignatius Catholic Church, 3235 Arden Way, Sacramento. After Mass, a gathering to celebrate Matt and Pat will be held at the Saint Ignatius Parish Hall. A reception for family and close friends will be held at the Bovill residence, 3351 Holly Drive from 2 to 5 p.m. Interment for Matt will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 5, at Mary's Chapel Cemetery, 12020 County Road 98, Woodland. Pat's ashes will be returned to her home in Duluth.
