Essie Mae Solomon, 84, died at Alderson Convalescent Hospital in Woodland on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013. She was born on April 4, 1928, in Butler, Ala., and had lived in Woodland for the past 60 years where she worked as domestic help for 35 years at homes and offices. Mrs. Solomon is survived by her husband of 60 years, Wallace Solomon of Woodland; son Norman Moss of Elk Grove, stepdaughter Josie Solomon; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild; sisters Geraldine Harris of Woodland, Floriner Edwards of Alabama and Mamie Hopkins of Ohio. She was preceded in death by stepson LeRoy Solomon, parents Jerry and Lillie Grey Thomas, and sisters Lula Mae Ruffin, Mary Hopkins and Louise Ruffin all of Alabama, and brother George Thomas of Alabama.
A visitation is scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22, at McNary's Funeral Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Greater Second Baptist Church, 435 Second St., under the direction of Pastor Mike Beard. A celebration of life will be held following the funeral service at the Second Baptist Church. Entombment will follow at Monument Hill Memorial Park, 35036 CR-22, Woodland. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Essie's favorite charity: St. Jude Children's Hospital.
