Dec. 26,1928 - Feb. 21, 2018 John Edward Sherwood, Jr., 89 of Woodland, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21. John was born to John E. and Crystal A. (Kenoyer) Sherwood on Dec. 26, 1928 in Los Angeles. His family eventually moved to Fresno, CA, where he attended West Park School, Edison and Hamilton Jr. High Schools, and graduated from Fresno Technical High School in 1946. John attended Pasadena College, where he met the love of his life, Jean M. Leming of Porterville, CA, whom he married Aug. 27, 1949 in Porterville. John received his BA degree from Pasadena College in 1952, did post-graduate work at Nazarene Theological Seminary in K.C., MO, Sacramento State, U.C. Berkeley and Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, where he received his MA degree in Elementary School Administration. During his career, John taught in Winters and Pismo Beach. After receiving his MA degree, he was appointed as principal at Oceano Elementary School in Lucia Mar Unified School District. John and Jean moved then moved to the Coachella Valley, where he served as principal at Roosevelt Intermediate School in Indio, Truman Intermediate School in La Quinta and as Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services in Desert Sands Unified School District, a position from which he retired in 1989. After retirement and two years of travel from the Pacific to the Atlantic, John and Jean lived in Post Falls, ID for seven years, then moved to Paradise in No. CA and on to Woodland. Since his retirement, John has spent considerable time collecting geneology and family history on his Sherwood/Kenoyer ancestors and sharing it with anyone who has a connection. John was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Association of California School Administrators, California Retired Teachers Association, The Skeptics Society, and The Truth Seekers. John is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Jean; daughters, Cathy McBeth of Fairfield, WA, Marcia Ewart of Woodland; son, Richard Sherwood of Redding; granddaughters, Dr. Lindsay McBeth-Foley of Bothell, WA, Kristin Sherwood of Redding, and Jennifer Ewart of Toluca Lake, CA; grandson, Jacob McBeth of Fairfield, WA; four great-grandsons in Washington, and sister, Loretta Sherwood of Portugal. At John's request there will be no service. Arrangements for cremation are under the direction of Kraft Bros. Funeral Directors, Woodland. Interment will take place at the Vandalia Cemetery, Porterville. Donation in John's memory can be made to Yolo Hospice, 530-758-5566.
