Katylu Burke passed away in Brookings, Ore., on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012. She was born on Nov. 2, 1942, to Arnold and Adeline Kappeler in Woodland. She is survived by her husband Clyde, brother Gerald Kappeler and wife Pat, a sister Marlene Arconi and husband Gordon, an aunt, three nieces, a great-nephew, six great-nieces, several great- cousins and many close friends.
Katylu graduated from Holy Rosary Academy, Woodland High School, and St. Joseph's Nursing School in San Francisco. After graduating from nursing school in 1965, she met Clyde when his commander in Army, Gerald Kappeler, ordered him to date his sister, regardless of his other interests. The marriage, a year later, lasted 46 years to the day. Katylu helped put her husband through graduate school and then worked as a registered nurse in clinics and doctors offices in Maryland and Colorado.
She and Clyde retired in 2003 and moved to Brookings from Aurora, Colo. She soon became active in the Brookings Harbor Garden Club and served various positions. In all of her years, friends and relatives described her as organized, tough as nails and optimistic. Her husband says that she was an exceptional partner and a great cook. She also sewed nearly all of her clothes, worked on dozens of outdoor projects and maintained close contact with her aunt.
Funeral services will be at the Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Brookings, Ore., beginning at 10 a.m. with a Rosary and mass at 10:30 a.m., both on Saturday, Sept. 8. Burial will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery, 860 West St., in Woodland, at 12:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 10.
