Walter (Sonny) Irby
Feb. 11, 1937 – Aug. 2, 2013
Walter (Sonny) Irby passed away Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at the age of 76, after a six-week battle with cancer.
Sonny was born in Woodland on Feb. 11, 1937. He was raised in Woodland and graduated from Woodland High in 1956. He served in the Army
until 1960. Once he finished his service he returned to Woodland and began his career at Colombo Bakery where he worked for 38 years. After an early retirement he went to work at UC Davis as a mail carrier and once again retired after 11 years. After taking a year off Sonny's passion for work led him to take a job with Woodland Joint Unified School District where he worked for six years with an amazing group of people right up until his illness began.
Sonny was an amazing husband and father. He truly lived life for his family. He had a passion for sports. If he wasn't coaching his kids then you would see him on the sidelines as their #1 fan. It was well known that when a bread truck was in front of a ball field then Sonny was at one of his kids games.
Sonny will be remembered for his involvement in the Woodland community. He spent 24 summers running the S&B Pizza booth at the Yolo County Fair. Sonny loved supporting Woodland's local high schools and would look forward to going to playoff games. This last year he dedicated much of his free time to the Pioneer High School softball team.
Sonny is survived by Sharon, his wife of 44 years, along with his children and their spouses, Khris Ramirez (Scott Pollice), Kerry Peter (Jeff), Scott Irby (Sara), Gina White (Barry), Brandee Sievers (Marc); as well as 14 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Katherine, and his brother Bob. He was preceded in death by his parents Noble and Mary Irby, as well as his sister Velma.
Sonny spent his life taking care of others and people truly loved him. He had a large circle of friends that he loved spending time with. He will truly be missed. Please join us for a celebration of life from 2 to 5 p.m., Monday, Aug. 12, at the Woodland Community & Senior Center, 2001 East St., Woodland.
