Arlene Florence Duffy, 91, was born in Quincy Illinois on Sept. 11, 1921. She passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013.
Arlene grew up in Sacramento. She was the daughter of Clem and Florence Schmit.
Arlene served as military secretary and stenographer first as a civilian, then as a U.S. Navy WAVE during World War II. Arlene was an active community member in Woodland, her hometown of 52 years. She was a longtime volunteer for March of Dimes and drove the Community Care Car with her husband Duff. Her interest and friends were many, including her bridge group, golf, traveling, needlepoint and painting. She loved writing and for many years wrote a human interest column for The Daily Democrat.
Most of all she was a loving and cherished wife of 66 years and a beautiful mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and a true friend. Arlene was generous, kind, bright and humorous. She loved us all unconditionally and we will miss her deeply.
Arlene is survived by her beloved husband and best friend in life, Francis "Duff" Duffy; daughter Patricia (Christopher) Carlson; son Michael (Leann) Duffy; grandchildren Heather and Sean (Shawndra) Duffy; great grandchildren, Levi, Kaylee and Ethan Duffy (Their grandmother Cindy Duffy); nieces Linda Sheppard and Barbara (George) Sell; nephew Gary (Caroline) Hughes; her devoted care taker Ili Qeleca and many friends. She was preceded in death by sisters Marian Sheppard, Ruth Hughes; and brother Ross Schmit.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19, at McNary's Funeral Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 301 Walnut St., Woodland, with a reception following at the Parish Hall.
