Garry Peterson Obituary
Garry Peterson
Sept. 22, 1936 - Aug. 5, 2013

Garry Peterson passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, in Woodland. Garry was born in Chico and grew up in Durham. After graduating from Chico State, he enlisted with the Army and traveled extensively in Europe. When his tour ended he was traveling through New York City and contacted the sister of an Army buddy to pass some time. He proposed to her on their first date and their 50th wedding anniversary would have been Nov. 29, 2013.
Garry taught at the Woodland High School for 38 years and was very proud of the fact that he had never taken a sick day. At least that's what he told his kids! He continued teaching at Yolo Community College for an additional 10 years. Garry spent many hours preparing free tax returns for his students, continually investing in kids and their futures. He was active with the Elks Lodge, serving on their scholarship committee, and enjoyed being a volunteer for the Community Care Car.
Garry was an avid fisherman and loved spending time with friends and family at their cabin in Lake Almanor. He was also a competitive cribbage player and enjoyed playing in regional tournaments. He was a voracious reader and passed that trait down to his daughter and hopefully, his grandchildren. He continually sought out used book stores for his favorite author and had extensive book collections at home and at the cabin.
Garry is survived by his wife Darlene, two children Mark and Lisa; and four grandchildren Emily, Clayton, Payton and Campbell, which he will be greatly missed by. He was very, very proud of his grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 10, at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be forwarded to The Community Care Car, P.O. Box 204, Woodland, 95776.
