Howard 'Smitty' Drayton Smith
July 30, 1938 - Sept. 29, 2013
Howard "Smitty" Smith was born in Los Angeles to George and Bernice Smith on July 30, 1938. He died on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at age 75 in Woodland.
Howard graduated from Torrance High School. He later served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a very proud member. During his service he became a decorated expert rifle and pistol marksmen. He loved golf, motorcycle riding, telling spooky stories by the campfire, fishing, scuba diving, going to the beach and picnics, camping and decorating. He also loved a good glass of wine. His charm and personality were popular with all who met him. Howard was a big San Francisco 49er fan but mostly he will be remembered as the best Grandpa ever.
Howard is survived by his partner Dolores Farnham Moe, and his four children Brent Smith, Greg Smith, Jill Ehring, Scott Smith; and 12 grandchildren Cameron, Michaela, Alexis, Lindsay, Riley, Cole, Hannah, Brianna, Adam, Kyle, Cassidy and Ella.
There will be a private burial for the family in Dixon at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery with full military honors Monday, Oct. 7, followed by a 3 p.m. open house, reception for all friends and family to be held at the American Legion No. 77, 523 Bush St., Woodland.
