June 22, 1922 - Oct. 5, 2012
Born Iona McCarty to John and Alice McCarty, in Cushing, Okla., on June 22, 1922, Iona Chandler passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Friday, Oct. 5, 2012. The wife and best friend of Herb Chandler for 66 years, Iona was also the mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and cousin to an extended family that all saw her as a loving, kind, gentle, and giving person who would do anything for anyone.
At an early age, Iona and her mother, father, sister Alda, and brothers Leonard and Lawrence moved from Oklahoma to Yuba City, where she grew up and graduated from Yuba City High School. Following graduation from high school, Iona moved to Woodland and started working for the Yolo County Recorder's Office and soon met Herb Chandler who, having recently returned with the 184th Regiment from the South Pacific, had started working for the Yolo County Agricultural Department. They soon married and had their first son, Michael Chandler, in 1949. During the early years, Iona was a housewife and helped her husband Herb build their first house on Viento Lane in Woodland. In 1950, the family moved to West Marshall Avenue and soon after came Jeffery Chandler. The Marshall Avenue home is still the family home. Iona remained a housewife until the boys were old enough for her to return to work for the Woodland School District. She retired, after 20 years of service, as the cafeteria manager for Douglas Jr. High School. Upon retirement, Iona and Herb traveled extensively, but she also enjoyed crocheting, dancing, and, most passionately, playing Bridge with her close lady friends.
Iona was preceded in death by her mother, father, sister, and two brothers. She is survived by her husband Herb, two sons Michael Chandler and wife Randi, and Jeffery Chandler; granddaughter Bonnie Christen and husband Josh, and grandson Collin Chandler; step-grandchildren Josh Hilliard and Lacey, Jenna Hilliard Green, and Jaimi Hilliard; great-grandson Chandler Christen, and step-great grandchildren Ryanne and Connor Green; niece Donna Barrus, husband Jerry and children Caleb and Kaydi; niece Debbie Casey and daughter Casey; not to mention her unofficially adopted daughter Julie Olson and husband Ray, and Julie's children Scott Price and Mindy Price Holdway and husband Casey and their twins Kizzie and Johnny. Iona also leaves behind many, many friends. We will all miss a sweet, caring, gentle, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and dear friend.
The family is planning a private family memorial. In-lieu-of flowers, those wishing to remember Iona can do so by donating, in her name, to the Woodland Healthcare Foundation, 1321 Cottonwood St., Suite 305, Woodland, 95695, 669-5680.
