Jack Martin died on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, at the age of 98. Born in Stockton, on Feb. 9, 1914, Jack attended elementary school there. After graduation his family moved to San Francisco where he went to high school. He enrolled at San Francisco State University and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in music. While at San Francisco State he organized an 11-piece "Dance Band" that played at many functions throughout San Francisco for several years.
In 1944 Jack met and married his wife Doris. They would have celebrated their 68th anniversary on Sept. 17, 2012.
He started his education career in 1944 gaining experience at various levels of teaching and administration.
During this period he spent his summers at Stanford University working toward his master's degree in education. He achieved that goal in 1948.
In addition in 1948, the couples first son, Jack, Jr., was born.
In 1955 Jack was hired by Kirk Cobb to assist in the superintendent's office in Woodland. That year, too, his son Michael was born. He later resumed teaching and retiring from teaching in 1977.
During the summer months Stuart White, Yolo County Fair manager, hired Jack to handle the entertainment for the fair. The job lasted 40 years into the time of Fair Manager Ron Maraviov. Jack also became involved with the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society. He organized a six-piece Jazz band that played annually at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee as well as many functions throughout the years. He also served a term as president of the Jazz Society.
Jack and family belonged to the Yolo Fliers Club for many years. He served as a board member from 1976-1979.
Jack is survived by his wife, Doris; sons Mike (Carolyn), Jack (Ann); grandsons Zachary and Christopher; and numerous nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews residing in the Bay Area; and sister-in-law Vera O'Donnell. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Lola Martin, brothers-in-law Charles and Edward O'Donnell, and sister-in-law Marie O'Donnell. Burial will be private.
