James Allen Noble

James Allen Noble, 89, passed away at home on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was a resident of Woodland since 1959. Jim was born Feb. 5, 1924, in St. Mary's, Ohio. Jim graduated from Sacramento High School in January 1942 then joined the
in February 1943 and served in Europe during
, returning 22 months later. He then returned to Sacramento and married his first wife, Joan Vanderhoff on Aug. 9, 1947. After graduating from the
University of Washington
with degrees in architecture and city planning, he returned to Sacramento where he worked for Sacramento County until 1959 when he was hired by Woodland City Manager John Ferns as the first city planner in Woodland. Jim and Joan raised their three children in Woodland. Joan passed away in March 1983.
Jim married his second wife, Jean Spirk in May 1984. They both retired from the city of Woodland in 1989, which meant traveling, lots of golf and good times.
Jim was very involved with the Boy Scouts of America throughout his life and proudly achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a member of E Clampus Vitas, a 54-year member (and past president) of Woodland Host Lions club, and a 66-year member of the Woodland
. He was also a longtime driver for the Community Care Car and member of the Yolo Fliers Club.
Jim is survived by his daughters Betsy and Laurie of Woodland, son Patrick (Eloise) of Utah, grandson Michael of Woodland, sister Jean Ehmann of Roseville, sister-in-law Debby Holst; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by wives Joan and Jean and daughter Lisa.
There will be a celebration of Jim's life from noon to 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 5, at the Woodland Elks Lodge, 500 Bush St. McNary's Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Donations in Jim's name may be made to the Woodland Community Care Car.
