James Edward Barnard, died on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2014 at age 94. He was a long time Merced resident at the time of his death. He was born March 9, 1919 in Fergus Falls, Minn., to Edna and Arthur Barnard.
He leaves behind his daughter, Jana (Charles) Rhoades; grandson Shawn Rhoades; great-granddaughters Cianna Rhoades (all formerly of Woodland), and Braelynn Rhoades of Peoria, Ariz.; granddaughter Stephanie Rhoades of Dallas, Texas; nieces Debbie (Mike) Alexander of Merced, Victoria (Lynn) Scoggins (Victoria recently passed away on Jan. 10, 2014), Patricia (Merle Elsing, Nancy (Kim) Hellstrom of Minnesota; and nephews Kenneth Nunes and Richard Nunes of Minnesota; as well many great and great great- nieces and nephews. James was predeceased by his wife of nearly 60 years, Ceva; and sister Jean Nunes of Minnesota.
A memorial service and reception is scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 17, at Park Merced, 3050 M St., Merced, with internment at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18, at San Joaquin National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Mary Helen Richards Trust for ETM (Education Through Music) in care of Laura Walter, 268 Donner Ave., Ventura, 93003.
